Building A Brighter Future

On May 21, 2015, RDL Architects’ team members attended the Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing (OCCH) annual meeting and awards luncheon in downtown Columbus, Ohio. With approximately 400 people in attendance, the theme of the event was “Building a Brighter Future” and from the quality of this year’s Awards of Excellence winners, the future of affordable housing looks very bright.

The event was led by OCCH president Hal Keller, who provided an update report on the organization, and celebrated its investors and partners who focused on working together to provide projects that are making a difference in the lives of people in their community.

OCCH is an independent, mission-driven nonprofit corporation based in Columbus, Ohio, that works with private and public developers to create affordable housing opportunities. Since its inception, OCCH has raised over $3 billion in private capital and invested in over 35,000 units of affordable housing in over 700 developments.

Karia Karia, a truly impressive young man with autism who was recognized for all of his achievements. His story was inspirational and his speech brought tears to many eyes as he described how he literally went from hiding in closets at summer camp to speaking in front of this event, which deserved him a standing round of ovation from the audience. With the assistance of OCCH, he was able to attend summer camp for five years.  The skills he learned and growth during this time allowed him the courage to earn his way up to become an eagle scout, graduate high school and he will be attending Columbus State Community College in the fall.

This was a wonderful example to conclude the event and continue our work of providing affordable housing for families in our communities.
