Hillcrest Senior Residences Becomes Largest Project in the U.S. to Receive PHIUS Passive House Certification
SHAKER HEIGHTS, OHIO (Jan. 3, 2018) – RDL Architects is excited to announce that the Hillcrest Senior Residences in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania received Passive House certification from PHIUS, the Passive House Institute US. The designation goes to projects able to demonstrate tested compliance with stringent energy performance standards.
Designed by RDL Architects, developed by The Community Builders, and built by Sota Construction Services, Hillcrest Senior Residences is a four-story building comprised of 66 affordable senior apartments, totaling approximately 67,000 square feet, making it the largest PHIUS-certified Passive House building in North America.
“We are tremendously delighted that Hillcrest received Passive House certification and honored to be a part of the team that brought this to reality,” says Kevin Dreyfuss-Wells, Senior Project Manager and Designer for RDL Architects. “Designing to Passive House standards provides long-term benefits for every resident, creating apartments that are quiet, comfortable, and extremely well-ventilated, all with exceedingly low utility costs.”
Passive House certification is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency, reducing a building’s ecological footprint and resulting in ultra-low operating costs that require little energy for space heating or cooling. On average, Passive House buildings consume 86% less energy for heating and 46% less energy for cooling when compared to a code-compliant building. Passive House projects follow three core strategies: building envelopes are tightly sealed, with air infiltration about eight times less than conventional construction; increased thermal performance requirements, including greater insulation with triple-glazed, ultra-high performance windows; and controlled ventilation to maintain a healthy and comfortable interior environment.
