Walton Apartments
Walton Apartments is a 52-unit senior independent housing development located along Clark Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Designed on a compact 0.89-acre urban infill site, the project demonstrates how thoughtful planning can deliver high-quality housing while complying with the City of Cleveland’s zoning regulations and Urban Form Overlay requirements.
The building is positioned close to Clark Avenue to reinforce the corridor’s pedestrian-oriented character. Active common spaces—including a two-story community room, living room, beauty parlor, business center, and fitness room—are placed along the street frontage, where ground-floor glazing strengthens the connection to the public realm. Vehicular access, parking, and service areas are located at the rear of the site via Walton Avenue.
The exterior massing is organized into two volumes that reflect the scale of adjacent corridor buildings. Variations in materials and window patterns break down the form, while a landscaped pavilion at the rear provides outdoor gathering space for residents.
The efficient footprint accommodates 36 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom units within tight site constraints. Universal Design principles are incorporated throughout, including six fully accessible units. Funded through 9% LIHTC and City of Cleveland HOME funds, the project supports inclusive, age-friendly housing along a revitalizing urban corridor.
